Journal Entry #11 - The Digital Movement - Viva Digital Revolution!

In this post, I would like to reflect on the lecture we had on the Digital Movement image but would also like to bring up a certain group that interestingly had something to do with the terms selected for the lecture as I researched on the topic of the Digital Movement
. This group selected the exact words "The Digital Movement"as their moniker and I would like to talk about them here because it made sense to me to do so since we are on the topic of Digital Culture.

The Digital Movement, who are they?

“We are a young movement seeking to grow and inject vibrancy into the budding communities of Web 2.0 technologists/entrepreneurs and new media advocates in Singapore (and of course, the world very soon).”

These were their words, spoken truly and I felt that it was like looking into a mirror of a future self since they are a bunch of people connected to the universities in Singapore. We are embarking on the same steps that they took to reach the place they are at. We are all born in a generation that lived with the computer, with the digital realm right at our fingertips.

The movement is here, and we are embarking on a journey that will require all the expertise we can get, all hands on deck as we sail towards something new.

In a world where the domains of motion graphics, UI/UX designers, applications, programming, powerful tools of the machine, augmented realities, virtual realities all merge to form one ubiquitous concept which is the digital realm coming ever nearer into our reality, it is hard to deny the changes to come.

So it comes to me as no surprise, that there needs to be groups like The Digital Movement existing in Singapore to compete with those in places like Silicon Valley, where it is abundant with new ideas and concepts coming from like-minded individuals every single day.

It is a new world full of hope and digital culture is coming to stay. With our digital realm, comes the dangers of the digital as well, as we become more interconnected with the internet highway, what then comes of it? We need to remember that we are human under all that wire, we need to remember as we step into connectivity, that there exists a danger in having our information and data processed ubiquitously by computers since it warrants the dangers of the internet in the real world such as hacking.

I feel that it is more important now than ever to realize the boundaries between the two worlds and mark them carefully as we approach  the inevitable merging that may soon to come.

Coming back to the lecture by Dr Alexander Koning, the Digital Movement in the sense of the word, is a movement that is generating new kinds of images pertaining to the digital realm. I thoroughly enjoyed that since it reflected the changing ways of artists everywhere. Images can now be enhanced through Photoshop, illustrated with pixels instead of actual ink. The world has certainly changed from the time of the old masters, and I think it's a good one.

I hope you enjoyed reading this reflection!
