Journal Entry #16 - Random Blends Reflection

After attending the Random Blends exhibition, I was extremely inspired by the amount of interactive Art installations there were throughout the event. Ranging from games all the way to walk-up-and-use exhibits, it was truly a sight to behold.

What was even more inspiring was that these were all works from fellow peers that have put their effort into creating wonderful works of art that could be viewed by many.

I came across a few artworks that truly stood out to me the most and have decided to critique them here in this post.

1. Breathing Bags by Zai Muhd and Cindy Chan

The plastic bags of the exhibit inhaling and exhaling deeply

Utilising the simple mechanics of a tool such as Arduino, Muhd and Chan was able to create a self-contained exhibit which highlighted the importance of conservation efforts such as recycling. Without overthinking it, they were able to create a metaphor for the environment in the form of lungs, as though the Earth itself was suffocating with all our litter.

The space which the exhibit was utilised was also important to the viewer as one could walk into it and the sounds that could be heard as the bags inflated and deflated were also intriguing to hear.

I liked the simplicity of the exhibit and in my opinion, they did not go overboard with the message and instead provided it clearly for the viewers without the need for much analysing.

On the other hand, the effort that into it is also interesting to discuss. The placement of certain objects on the bag, it would have been interesting if there was a significance to the objects placed onto the bags as well aside from them being common litter.

In conclusion, it was a very intriguing art piece that carried the message across clearly.

2. Dandelion

Augmented reality at its finest

The next piece is called Dandelion and through the use of augmented reality, one was able to view the interactive images that would appear behind the digital surface as opposed to the static image in the real world.

This intercept of both reality and the virtual is something that spoke to me loud and clear, especially as one who has begun the course to study such materials. Augmented reality and the Internet of Things were always my main fascinations in the current stage of the digital realm and I felt that this particular piece had merged the concept of Art and AR nicely.

While it is certainly not novel I liked that this idea was presented in the exhibition as it highlights clearly the advancement in our technology to create such forms of art and it seemed most appropriate that it appeared in the event.

In conclusion, it was an inspiring piece as well as to the performance and artistry that technology can afford us in this day and age. I am pretty sure the old masters would be pretty surprised at the way Art is presented now, but perhaps they might be just as intrigued as I was.

It was a certainly eye-opening experience and it certainly spurs me to try for this as well and perhaps submit my own work in the future!
